Now THAT was an awesome run.  Aaron and I planned to do our run together for the first time in a LONG time.  Excepting a few races over the years, we haven't done a training run together since before Abe came around, so about 6 years.  Our friend who I swap kids with had our kids this morning so we took off to Eldorado canyon to run the trails together.  We ended up having 6 inches of snow and 15 degree weather, but it didn't seem to affect us much (other than slowing the pace a little).  Aaron of course wore his Vibram Five Fingers and was a little concerned at first about his feet getting too cold, but after a couple of miles he reported that his feet were warmed up and the snow was not bothering them at all, so we journeyed onward.  The trail had a few challenging sections where there were larger rocks hidden under the snow and we both took our fair share of spills but for the most part it was a pretty clear trail and the snow only made it feel softer.  I twisted my ankle a number of times but Aaron didn't seem to have the same problem with his barefoot shoes.  I guess his feet just slipped off the rocks and didn't jolt his ankle around as much as me in my comparatively clunky Nike's. After about 8 miles, the trail dropped us off onto the Eldorado Canyon road and the remaining 5+ miles were on the road.  The final mile and a half was a long uphill and it felt good to crest the hill and finish an epic run.  I LOVED having Aaron as good company (singing through the woods at times in our own private wilderness).  That guy just makes everything more fun (or as he would say, funner.)    :)

Totals:

Elevation change: 1,461 ft.

Distance: 13.41 miles

Pace: 9:36 (best mile was 7:31, slowest was 12:16 (straight up a mountain in the snow).

Here we are after the run.

And here's a shot of Aaron's toasty warm feet.

Even though Aaron's 3 feet taller than you, I still think you guys make a cute couple.

Wow! What an awesome run! You're very brave to venture out in that much snow. I only ran in about 1/2 inch this morning.

Burt-lets see, I'm 5'4" and he's 6'2" so...OH WOW, that IS 3 feet! I never really did the math. He also weighs about 200 lbs more than me, I think. Isn't that the difference between 115 and 180? I'm not sure...I wasn't a math major or anything.

Carolyn-Maybe we just had more snow because we ran at 8:30 a.m. instead of 5 a.m. :)

Be careful not to convert to metric. And don't forget to carry the one.

From allie on Wed, Dec 02, 2009 at 19:37:37 from 67.177.43.41

180 - 115 = 65; 6+5 = 11; 1+1= 2[hundred]

yes. 200. you are correct.

and don't listen to burt about carrying ones. carrying any number is completely out. it's all about google calculator.

This is a precious run. The picture is so cute.

So, Nan, when are you going to ditch the clunky Nikes for a pair of five fingers?

From MichelleL on Thu, Dec 03, 2009 at 00:44:01 from 71.213.97.46

Sounds like an adventure! Thanks for posting the pic.

I LOVE it. I absolutely LOVE it. Thanks for sharing your rad run. You two are great.

Allie-Thanks for verifying.

Bec-Aw, thanks.

Danny-I do actually have some VFFs but I have only logged a few miles in them. I guess my excuse is that "its not broken, so don't fix it." Back in high school I got some coaching on my running from from a sports phisiologist masters runner who taught me the concepts of a quick cadence, light on my feet, leaning forward from my ankles, and so forth. I'm sure I've avoided a lot of injuries because of not being a heel striker all these years. But I do think running barefoot or in VFFs will make me even more in tune with my form and strengthen my feet. I'm just not willing to run out in the ice and cold in them as Aaron is. I'll run in them today at the gym, just for you. (Its 0 degrees and icy anyway.)

Michelle-Thanks!

Jess-Hey! I didn't know you joined. I like your goal to run an Ultra with your husband someday. Maybe we'll do that together someday too. Someday.
