Long run this morning.  Stashed water bottles last night so I didn't have to wear the fuel belt.  Carried Clif Shots and sour slices.  Ate about 250 calories over 18 miles, which is a little bit more than I have been doing on my long runs, but I think it was beneficial.  I never felt totally depleted and was able to hold pace all the way to the end.  I planned on averaging 7:30 pace, but it just felt more natural and very comfortable to run 7:20s.  Around mile 6 this master's Iron Man Triathlete guy creeped up on me and we started chatting and running together.  I had to laugh because I think I have fallen victim to other competitive men for the last three long runs in a row now.  They seem to want to run a half stride ahead of me and the pace keeps getting faster.  Last week was the same scenario, this guy I was running with could NOT seem to run slower than 7:10 pace even though he didn't have any reason to run faster and I told him at least 5 times that I didn't need to be going that fast.  Finally when he took a pee break, I spotted a porta-potty and ran off without telling him so we could "accidentally" get separated and I could run slower the last few miles.  This morning seemed to be the same.  The guy kept talking about his running accomplishments and kept running faster each mile...a half stride ahead of me of course.  We ended up doing about 6 miles together between 6:30-7:10 pace...so that brought my overall average down quite a bit.  Two weeks ago it was a different guy in the Runner's Edge group who seemed to want to see me suffer and threw in a 5 mile tempo at 6:30 pace.  I think he just wanted to get me beyond conversational pace so I would shut up or something.  Then afterwards he expressed that he was pretty impressed and a little threatened because he didn't want to be "chicked" by a mother of 3.  Haha.

Anyway, this morning after the masters guy was finished I still had 5 miles to go so I slowed back to a comfortable pace around 7:20s.  Overall I felt GREAT and I am WAY excited to race a fast half-marathon next weekend.

Total for today: 18 miles @ 7:07 average.

great running today. way to run hard with the iron man guy. haha. i loved your story. i am excited for you and your half marathon next weekend. i am quite sure you will have no problem maintaining a 6:20 pace, probably even faster than that. do you know what the course is like? also, how long are you planning your longest long run will be?(sorry, lots of longs)...and how many weeks out from TOU?

Hey Nan, I bet you are already planning this, but I would take clif shots in your 1/2 marathon to make sure you can tolerate them at the faster clip. I found I didn't like all the chewing and attempting to get them off my teeth, but it only bothered me at 1/2 marathon or faster pace. So I switched from shot blocs to gu's. Did you post somewhere the nature of your race? Is it a canyon 1/2 or flat?

The race starts at 8,500 ft and ends at 7,500 ft so it is a nice downhill course. Mostly a paved path, some gravel and some rolling hills. It is on a frontage road, but a good distance parallel to I-70 coming towards Denver. Seems to be a pretty fast course as the winning times are usually around 1:20. Course record is 1:15. Thanks for the tip Michelle, I definitely prefer Gu for the same reasons you suggested. That was my first attempt with clif shots and I learned that I prefer a more liquid sugar. I will take a couple of gu's with me on my half, thanks. I like the taste of the honey stix too, Allie...but they are a little difficult to eat..do you find that? I also like that gu's have more calories and I can slam 'em quickly. I think I have a pretty tough stomach, gratefully. The honey stix are nice for long track workouts and long runs when I don't mind stopping and also don't need 100+ calories at a time.

yes, honey stix are definitely not as convenient as gu, but they work really well for me because i CANNOT, for whatever reason, tolerate any sort of gel. still haven't used them during a race though because i haven't found a method of consumption that works well at race pace. too sticky :)
