Hi FRBers!  I don't actually know how far I ran but I'll say 3.  Haven't worn a running watch in nearly 2 years now and haven't been running much lately, but I'd like to start running more and writing more.  I'll probably mostly write in my personal blog but I'll link here.

Welcome back :) I really appreciated the honesty in your blog post. I don't know if you are much of a reader, but Terry Tempest Williams' When Women Were Birds may be a nice read for you right now.

And thanks for the information you gave Andrea. Very helpful.

From Claudio on Wed, Apr 03, 2013 at 14:06:55 from 216.99.185.50

Welcome back! I'd like to venture and answer your question from my own experience... I have learned to let go of an emotional burden in two ways: 1) thinking about it, deeply and extensively (nice slow runs...); and 2) talking about it, calmly and honestly.

The thinking part comes more easily to me; I try to avoid rationalizations but aim for the understanding of how certain events, in the past or present, may have ended up being processed, maybe incompletely or erroneously, in my mind, and understanding how some feelings brought about by these occurrences were never expressed and buried inside somewhere since they hurt too much and/or I did not have the courage/strength/skills to set them straight right then and there. Little did I know that they would still continue to hurt, in subtle ways but with devastating effects, for many years to come! More about the thinking part, I also like to write down my dreams and look for messages there; and finally, it is important to me to think about and find situations where I might have assumed the burdens or the consequences of responsibilities that should squarely belong somewhere else.

The talking part is equally important, maybe even more important, since the thinking without talking is not completely sufficient, but one can always do the thinking while talking (which is something I don't excel at, hence the extensive thinking before I open my mouth...) I have found that once an hidden emotional stress is brought to light this way, it dissolves like snow under the sun and its effects go away just like that.

All of this of course assumes the awareness of having an emotional burden hidden somewhere inside, and then the strength and willingness to work on it, which for me was the hardest step - but sounds like you're way ahead of this!

Best wishes for your writing and your running, I will be looking forward to continue reading your posts, and race reports.

From Nan on Thu, Apr 04, 2013 at 10:56:41 from 98.245.117.176

Lulu-Thanks for the recommendation. I'll put it on my Kindle wish list. I read the synopsis and it looks deep and interesting.

Claudio-Thanks for your words. I agree that talking is equally important to thinking. I could use a little more of both preferably without distraction. I think most important for me right now is acknowledging that something needs to change in how I've been dealing with my emotions and then changing it.

Feeling better every day! No lightheadedness!

Saw a blind man this morning walking his dog.  I've seen him a handful of times before and he is always friendly.  He is a sweet, gentle looking man.  His eyes are always wide open but they look black.  I usually say something before I get too close so he's not startled, but for some reason I didn't speak up first this morning.  As I approached, I nimbly pranced the outer edge of the path opposite his side and as I got within a few feet of him, he let out an enthusiastic "Good Morning!" with a smile like if he knew me.  I greeted him back and couldn't help but smile at his happiness.  He is BLIND yet completely and utterly stoked to be alive at 7 a.m. on a Saturday.  What would that be like to be completely blind?  Hard to imagine.  As I pranced off beyond him I suddenly felt overwhelmingly grateful for my eyes.  I'm grateful for my sight.

Welcome back to the world of regular blogging!

I have some thoughts on being blind. We all are. We do not remember our life before we were born and we do not see the multitude of spirits around us most of the time, and most of us never. Perhaps the Lord allows some people among us to be visually blind to help us remember that we are going through our life blindfolded as to the unseen world to see how well we do mostly on faith.

2.5 mile warm up including strides, 4X400 on the track, jogging in between each, 2 mile cool down

My first "workout" in FOR-EV-ER.  I have my work cut out for me in order to get back into racing shape! My 400s were 87, 83, 84, 81 and I was working hard near the end!  Its hard to believe a couple of years ago I ran a 15K in 5:22 pace and now even getting close to that pace and trying to hold it for a quarter of a mile sends me into oxygen debt.  Its official: I am currently OUT OF SHAPE.  I already knew that of course but seeing it manifest so drastically in a workout is eye opening. The good news is that I am already pretty close to my healthy racing weight, so most of the work will be in strengthening my heart, lungs, and legs.

I've been thinking about racing again. Thinking that maybe if I at least have a GOAL race in mind, it might help motivate me to start doing workouts and running every day again.  But the Bolder Boulder is too soon and too long of a race to get fit for in time.  I need something shorter.  The past few summers Aaron and the kids have done this Boulder summer race series including a 3K, 2K and Mile. In the past I've always cheered from the sidelines and trained for longer races but this summer I think I'll race too!  Besides, what better way to come back to fast running than to run short, and FAST?  The first race in the series is the West End 3K on June 5th.  Here we go again! Time to crack the whip!

My friend, Heather offered to watch K for us so Aaron and I could go running together.  Aaron biked Ali to school while I fed K and then we biked K over to Heather's and ran from there.  Warm up to Fairview track, strides.

4X200 39, 38, 38, 37

4X400 82, 78, 81, 80

Cool down back to Heather's.  Saw lots of familiar faces out running fast on the track including my former Coach, Darren.  He was surprised that I was doing such a short workout...well that's where I'm at!  In fact, this morning after my feet and calves were burning half way through my short workout I said to Aaron on the way home that racing in June is probably even too ambitious.  See, I am registered for the Little Red Riding Hood 70 mile distance with my sisters, and really ought to do some cycling sometime between now and June 1st. As for running, I may have to just shoot for the Pearl Street Mile in July.

Beautiful day out there today!  Heading over to the school in a bit to cheer for the kids in their fun run.

2X800 in 2:57, 2:46

4X400 in 79, 80, 77, 77

2X200 in 36

I am finally feeling some speed slowly awakening in my legs.  Not necessarily pep, but slow, steady "speed." Relative to the pokey slowness I've been experiencing as of late, anyway.

Cindy didn't feel too hot because that was her first track workout in a while but I actually felt a bit of a "breakthrough" today now that I have a few track workouts under my belt.

Saw the Japanese team clipping along up Bear Creek Path with their Coach riding his bike behind them.  Also saw some graffiti on the sidewalk that said "Stop buying GMOs" with a picture of a flower next to it.  Did I miss the memo? Is there a graffiti initiation requirement to be a part of the no-GMO movement?

Through Aaron's health scare we have really cleaned up our diet. Next time you're folding laundry, watch Genetic Roulette on youtube. There are also a bunch of good food documentaries on Netflix that are worth your time. Food Inc., Food Matters, ect.

Yes, we are coming to Utah next week to visit family and ride Little Red! Yay!

Was stunned by the most incredible sight less than a hundred meters from me this morning.  An elk running at full speed (probably 20 mph) leaping fences like they were nothing.  He bolted through the soccer fields at East Boulder Rec Center and on through the open space.  If he was being hunted the hunter didn't stand a chance!

Also saw a unicyclist commuter wearing no helmet.  Hope he didn't crash. Unicycling looks like a killer workout.  No coasting or you tip and constant core activation to balance.

Last day of school for the kiddies!!

Aaron and I decided last minute to do a trail race together at Eldora Ski Resort.  It was my first race in a very long time and I'm not in "race shape" but we had a lot of fun!  Aaron earned his gloating rights beating me by 10 seconds!!  We ran together for the first few miles then he gapped me on a downhill.  I reeled him in up the last climb but didn't quite catch him. On the final downhill he put the nail in the coffin.  The lead woman was ahead of us by a minute or two, not sure.  I wasn't feeling very competitive since I'm not in great shape.  I did win a free pair of La Sportiva trail shoes for winning my age group, which was cool. Mostly I just really enjoined the beautiful scenery of mountain lake vistas throughout a thick, wooded forest. The course was a fun, technical, rolling mountain adventure.  Heard a guy take a digger behind me on one of the steep rocky downs.  Ouch.  Glad we came out un-scathed.

Woke up this morning to 4 inches of water in our basement.  The kids came running upstairs all excited because they could play with their Lego boats in the pools in their room!!

Our day consisted of taking down two bunk beds and carrying tons of furniture and office things upstairs and then tearing up 1,400 sq ft of wet carpet and piling it up on the driveway.  Aaron's office was the deepest spot with about 6 inches of water. Two computers and a few boxes of books and files ruined.  Thankfully we had 6 guys from our church helping us all day and friends watching our kids so we could work.  And thankfully we still have a house.  Some others in other parts of the county were not so lucky.  They are saying this a 1,000 year flood of "biblical proportions."  And its still raining.

Got a chance to get out for an hour of pool running at S. Boulder Rec center.  They are not flooded. Just about every house with a basement is though.  The water table is saturated.  More water bucketing in our basement.

I went out for a run to see the damage.  Its pretty ugly out there. And it smells like a dump yard.  Every house in our neighborhood has wet stinky carpet piled up on their driveways.

Ran with my new friend, Cate.  She has kids in my kids grades at school.  She also ran collegiatley and raced with NYAC over the past few years.  Now she is looking to set some goals for racing again after moving to Boulder a couple of months ago.  It was good to feel of her energy and motivation...rubbed of on me a little.  Got me thinking about running more and maybe looking for a race to put on my schedule.  Not yet though.  Gotta get some consistent base running in first.  My running has been easy and sporatic lately as I have been utilizing running for purely stress relief.

Ran my old S. Boulder Creek loop and it was sad.  The trail is still technicall closed from the flood.  I had to hop the fence to run it.  A majority of the trail is so washed out, it looks like a creek bottom.  Then there are sections of sand and drift weeds too.  Not super runnable. I hope Boulder can come up with the money to restore these trails sometime over the next year or two...our trail system is extensive and SO awesome.

Fell off the wagon for keeping a training log.  I'm back now.

Running has been a little sporadic.  I had a strained calf and took about a week off.  Aaron was out of town so I didn't run much that week except for one day when I ran one mile laps around my house checking in on the kids each time, for a total of 4 miles. Now I'm getting back into a groove.

On this morning’s run I wore my iPod and blasted music into my ears for the first time in…years, I think.  Wow, it was just what I needed.  I was overcome with an incredible emotional response. I literally cried for the entire first 20 minutes of my run.  I’ve been feeling up and down lately. More down than I would like to admit, not for any really good reason, I’m just struggling to feel happy in life in general.  And today, the music lifted me.  Brought back all sorts of happy memories.  Exposed my doubts and insecurities. Lifted my confidence and gave me a resolve to be happy.  It was exactly what I needed.

Stopped to pee at S. Boulder Rec. and was caught talking to a guy who was asking Boulderites for experience sharing about the Boulder flood.  I told him about how our basement was flooded and we still haven't fixed it over two months later because the contractors are busy and we weren't dying to drop $12K just for fun.  We are finally getting it fixed though.  Should be done in another couple of weeks. It'll be nice to get the kids back in their bedrooms and Aaron back in his office.  Its been a little scrunchy upstairs.

SNOW!  Its been such a nice November with temps in the 60s and not much snow to speak of but last night we finally got some!  It'll probably only stick around a couple of days but at least the ski resorts have something to work with.  We got a family pass to Eldora this year, so I'm excited to get up there and shread some white stuff with the kids.  I also got some used skis and boots so I can take it easy with them on the kiddy slopes.  It'll be easier to chill with the kids on skis than on my board.  Hopefully Aaron and I will still have a chance to board on a few good powder days though.

Just felt like going longer today. It was so gorgeous and 40 degrees felt like summertime.  In a few days I'll be running on the beach in 70 degree temps.  We are going to Costa Rica for Christmas break.  We'll be staying in a house right on the beach for two solid weeks. Swimming, surfing, hiking in the rainforest to see waterfalls, snapping pics of howler monkeys, zip-lining through the forest, just a few of the things we have in store. Our first international trip as a family and I am SO excited!

No run today.  Red eye flight and long day in the car traveling from San Jose to Montezuma by way of bumpy roads and a ferry boat.  Took a few stops for food, groceries, and to swim in the ocean.  Our car was loaded with beach sand by the end of the day.  Finally crashed down at the first available hotel in Montezuma at 8 p.m. and not even the ants and lizards on the wall distracted me from sleep (well the kids crying about the ants did, but not for long).

Easy early morning jog around Montezuma.  Legs pretty trashed from the travel day yesterday.  At breakfast a family of bluejays kept stealing food from our plates.  One stole a bite of food right out Kelsie's hand and she didn't even seem to notice.   We shooed them away for the first 20 minutes but finally gave in and started feeding them our leftovers.

After playing at the park and checking out of our hotel, we grabbed more food and drove up the hill to a jungle zip line canopy tour.  Aaron hiked in with Kelsie on his back to snap pictures while I went on the tour with the three older kids.  It was EPIC!!  I think we passed over 8 lines.  There was a break after the 5th one to hike down to a waterfall and jump off it into a pool below.  Also a rope swing on the side of the pool.  SO FUN.

Arrived at Casa Don Tomas yesterday at 4 p.m. Greeted by happy, friendly Chepita, our housekeeper.  Enjoyed a nice 5 miler this morning along the beach to the south across Playa Santa Teresa, Playa Carmen, and Playa Mal Pais.  Over one section of beach there were hundreds of little fishies that were laying there, washed up from high tide.  Fisherman were putting them on hooks and tossing them back in to catch bigger fish.  No poles, just a line, a hook, and a little fish washed up on shore.  They made it look easy, but surely there's a technique to it.  One Costa Rican man with a big smile on his face was carrying six big fish back home and as I passed him, one jumped in reflex and fell to the ground.  He turned and smiled as he picked it back up and headed home to filet his catch.

Started out running north on the beach, but at high tide the only sand to run is dry and soft.  So after a mile I headed up to the dirt road and continued throug Hermosa on what turned out to be more like a trail than a road.  Beautiful.  After Aaron's run he went into town to get a few gifts for Christmas and came back with a 4-wheeler.  We piled all six of us on that one ATV and went exploring to Playa Hermosa and back to Playa Carmen for some souvenier shopping and dinner.  My legs were quite muddy after hanging them off the back of the ATV and shoulders were quite tired from hanging on over the bumps.  Definitely an adventure to remember.  Ali sitting in front of Aaron, Abe behind him, Bre and I on the back with Kelsie in my backpack.  We got some strange looks luckily there aren't many policemen in this sleepy little surf town.

Merry Christmas!  This is definitely the most unique Christmas of my life.  It seems strange without snow and home.  We weren't sure if he'd make it this far South, but Santa did bring the kids one local gift and a treat.  Then we made pancakes and eggs for breakfast, played games in the pool, went body boarding and surfing, built a nativity scene on the beach and sang Christmas songs.  Later in the day we had some friends over whom Aaron had met at a networking event a couple of months ago in the Dominican Republic.  Nice company, good food, and beautiful sunset on the beach.
