Achilles.

Went in to Dr. Tim (deep acupuncture guy who is actually a chiropractor) again and he did some e-stim, laser therapy (don't really know what that is), ankle adjustments, and super deep tissue massage on my calf (ouch).  He also examined my feet and fit me for some "good feet" inserts for my shoes (basically a lightweight, generic orthotic).  The idea is to stabilize my heel as much as possible so as to get me through the next week with minimal achilles aggravation so I can be pain free on the marathon starting line.  I'll also be doing some pool running, ice massage every day, and taking ib profen three times a day for the next week.  We're pretty much pulling out all the stops considering the fact that I can't really lose anything from doing those things, but I could lose strength/health in my achilles if I don't do all those things.

I will keep my fingers and all of my toes crossed that this will do the trick Nan. I just got my waterproof MP3 player "bag" - it is pretty sweet and definitely made the time go by faster today!!

I'll be praying for a loose achilles for you. Good luck on a good week of alternate training.

If it makes you feel better, I really modified my training the last 2 weeks before my 100 because of my achilles. Avoided all hills, minimal speedwork. It never stopped hurting. But, during the entire 100 mile race, even on the uphills, it never really slowed me down. So think positive, and you'll get through it.

Just curious, do you have a Strassburg sock? Sleeping in that is one of the things that seems to help me the most- really prevents the tightness in the morning.

Bonnie-Yay for waterproof mp3 cases and the saving of our sanity!

Jessica-Thanks! Alternate training...sounds so holistic.

Jon-Thanks for the tip. I do not have a Strassburg sock. I have a plantar fasciitis boot though, maybe I will try that. Honestly I'm not too concerned about my tight achilles affecting my marathon. Its been hurting for nearly two months now and I've raced just fine on it. It is gradually getting worse with each race and fast workout I do though so I'm trying to get the inflammation back down to a minimum and prevent it from being so tight that it may become damaged by running a marathon on it. I'll keep the positive thoughts coming though, thanks!

Yep, do some alternate training, have a baby in a bathtub and eat organic vegetables from your own garden and you should pretty much ace your marathon (: I'm just sayin'.
