Ran a small out and back trail race this morning, the Holy Cow 10K in conjuction with the Westminster City Fair. 

Ran from my house, 5 miles to city park to warm up and get a few extra miles.  7:25 ave.

Registered for the race and ate a gu and some water.  Did a couple strides and potty visits. 

Race start was a little disorganized.  The police officer who was leading the race on his bike was still talking to the guys he thought would be the leaders to tell him he was leading the race and ask if we had any questions.  Suddenly some guy over a megaphone says "Ready GO!" And we weren't even in start position rather 5 or 10 feet behind the line chatting and shaking out our legs.  We all went anyway and laughed about it.

Mile 1:  5:52  Pretty flat, no other woman really stayed with me at all, so I knew it would be a race to beat as many guys as I could.

Mile 2:   5:53  A few rollers, but overall pretty flat.  Ran around a few diferent guys as we were trying to get into our own grooves.

Mile 3: 5:51 Felt good, little downhill

Mile 4: 6:02  Took a sip of water at the turn-around.  Gradual uphill after the turn-around. Realized that there were only 4 guys ahead of me and the next woman behind was about a minute back.

Mile 5: 6:10 Headwind and a few rollers.  Caught another guy.

Mile 6: 6:03 Pretty flat, getting pretty tired.

Final .2:  5:50 pace, finished strong.

Garmin said average pace was 5:58 and total elevation change was around 700 up and down, so definitely not a flat course. 

Was pretty happy about the fact that only 3 guys beat me.  Obviously it wasn't a super competitvie race.  2nd place woman was a minute behind.  I got a trophy and a $100 gift certificate at Road Runner Sports!  Yeah!  New shoes!

Took the kids to the fair afterwards and they had a blast in the bouncy house and slide.  Good times!

Holy mackerel you are fast!

I guess that's what happens when NCAA-type competitive runners go "slumming" in the local races.

I'll wave as you pass the next time I see you in a race...

Out of curiosity, what do you think is the difference between achieving say, 7:00 miles vs. sub-6:00. Is it more natural talent, or speedwork, or experience/training over a long period of time, or something else entirely?

Thanks! I think the sub-6:00 race pace is a combination of all the things you mentioned. I do recognize that I have a bunch of natural ability in running but its not doing me any good unless I go push myself in the interval sessions and run a lot of miles. I also think that I probably have an unusually high pain tolerance and actually enjoy pain sometimes. I am not at all comfortable when I'm running 6:00/mile pace for an extended period of time, in fact I am usually suffering a great deal of pain but my mind and my body thrive on it; especially when I get to that euphoric level. That is why when people tell me I am crazy for running like I do, I don't even attempt to deny it. Yes, my addiction to running IS a little bit crazy...maybe a lot crazy. But it feels SO good!

And I do believe that ANYONE, regardless of their "natural ability" can work their way up to a very competitive level of running if you adopt a commitment to push yourself to an uncomfortable pace in speed workouts and racing and stick with your training plan for a long period of time. Of course there is a whole lifestyle commitment that comes with it too like eating healthy, getting a lot of sleep, hydrating well, recovering, ect ect...

Jon, as far as your request for trash talk between Allie and Me over TOU...a Win for Allie is a win for me and a Win for me is a Win for Allie. See, I was once Allie's coach when she was running at Lone Peak High school so I have every right to take joy in her acomplishments. And now as the veteran marathoner that Allie has become, the tables have turned and she has offered me lots of coaching advice as I am just beginning with the marathon distance. So technically we are both each others Coach. :) That is why if either of us win then BOTH of us win...don't you agree, Allie? Although I'm thinking more and more that maybe we should just hold hands across the finish line?! Haha. Cheese!

I think Jon may have saw the comment I left you about how I'm rooting for you to win, and then I turned around and told Allie I was rooting for her to win. Just like Peter when Bobby and Greg had a pull-up contest on the Brady Bunch. Or when Peter used a lookalike when he had a date with two different girls at the same time.

Another great race. I half want to come up and watch TOU because I would be thrilled to see you two take 1-2 in some combination, but I think it might make me quite sad since I was planning on running that race before I got injured.
